How to produce snow in temperatures above 0 degrees? Do such solutions guarantee that winter sports events taking place at the onset of winter will be held as scheduled in advance? Let us dispel doubts around this topic.

Climate changes are inevitably influencing our lives to a great extent. The fact that yearly average temperature is gradually rising and it is more and more difficult to predict the meteorological phenomena is reflected in many branches of the economy. Ski resorts cannot rely on the weather in terms of opening the seasons. Also the organizers of winter sports events have to deal with a similar problem. This year’s inauguration of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup in Sölden, Austria was at risk as well. On the first day (Saturday, 27th October 2018) it was possible for the Women’s competition to take place. However, on Sunday (28th October 2018) the Giant Slalom’s start was cancelled due to strong wind. The wind also caused a great deal of stress at the ski jumping competition in November that was held in Kuusamo, Finland. Yesterday (12th December 2018), FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski, in English: the International Ski Federation) announced that the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in Titisee-Neustadt, Germany which had been cancelled due to the bad weather conditions (high temperature, rainfalls and lack of snow) would take place in February 2019, in Obersdorf and Willingen, in Germany.

It would seem that the Nordic and Alpine skiing season opening is a bit of a lottery for the organisers, but in fact the fortune can be helped a little. A few weeks before the inauguration of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup in Wisła-Malinka, Poland, alarming information was presented by the media. According to this information, the competition on the Adam Małysz Hill was put in question due to positive temperatures. Meanwhile, during both, the qualifications and the men’s team competition won by the Polish team, we saw the effect of the All Weather Snow machines provided by their Polish producer – the Supersnow Company. The machines produced a thick layer of snow, thus creating almost perfect conditions that enabled to hold the competition. The entire hill jump was covered with a thick layer of snow produced with All Weather Snow devices, supplied by their Polish manufacturer – Supersnow, and the competition was conducted in very good conditions. By the end of the competition, the nature helped as well as the temperature dropped and the produced snow layer hardened. It eliminated the roughness of the landing hill. The information was confirmed during an interview with the chairman of the Polish Ski Federation – Apoloniusz Tajner.
